Marijuana Laws & Legislation for Bonaire
As of February 2025, cannabis remains illegal in Bonaire for both recreational and medical use. Despite being a special municipality of the Netherlands, Bonaire does not adopt the Netherlands’ tolerant stance toward cannabis. Possession, sale, cultivation, and consumption of cannabis are prohibited, and individuals found with even small amounts can face serious legal consequences, including fines and potential imprisonment.
In recent years, there have been discussions and initiatives aimed at changing cannabis policies on the island. The Cannabis Association of Bonaire (CVB), for instance, has been actively advocating for the legalization of cannabis, emphasizing its potential medical benefits and economic opportunities. However, as of now, these efforts have not led to any legislative changes, and cannabis remains illegal on the island.
Visitors and residents should be aware that Bonaire’s cannabis laws are strictly enforced. Unlike the Netherlands, where regulated coffeeshops operate, Bonaire does not have such establishments, and the possession or use of cannabis can result in significant legal repercussions. It is advisable to refrain from bringing or using cannabis products on the island to avoid legal issues.

It is usually pretty safe, especially if you do it during the day. An other option is to directly cruise around with your vehicle in one of the suburbs (Tera Kora or Antriol for instance) and ask teenagers around,

More Information
Bonaire is not your typical Caribbean island, it is almost deserted and you can forget the white sand beaches except on the inhabited Klein Bonaire. However, it is home to one of the best activities to do when you are stoned: snorkeling. It has the most protected reefs in the Caribbean and the fish life is amazing. And all sites are accessible from the shore, so you just smoke your stuff and jump into the water. Great experience !
