Tofo, Mozambique

Smoking tolerance level [1= very illegal 5=virtually legal]: 2

Legislation: Marijuana is illegal in Mozambique, and so is any related action.

Law enforcement: Mozambique police is notorious for annoying foreigners and trying to get a good bribe. So, you really have to remain discreet and avoid travelling with it.

Police are very corrupt, so getting busted means a bribe. “You’re screwed if any paperwork gets filed,” so smile and pay up. Cops don’t want to arrest you, they want your cash.

Where to buy marijuana: In Tofo, at the market, you’ll find people who’ll sell you some or can set you up. Try to go around 6PM.

In Maputo, don’t try on the streets. If you stay in a hostel, try to ask one of the guys who work there.

another reporter added: “Stay at a backpacker hostel, have an employee get it for you. You don’t even have to ever hold it, he’ll roll ’em up for you. Smoke inside the hostel (outdoors, of course), don’t carry any when you go outside the hostel, and you will have no worries.”

Marijuana prices: In 2006, I was quoted US$30 per kilo. Nobody bothers saving roaches, pot is dirt-cheap.

Marijuana brands: Local. I’ve seen better, but makes the job.
