Settat, Morocco

Smoking tolerance level [1= very illegal 5=virtually legal]: 3

Legislation: Smoking marijuana, or “kif” is illegal in the Kingdom of Morocco and the penalty for being caught with it is ten years in prison. However, tourists are frequently let off with only a fine due to Morocco’s need for both the tourism dollars and the $US7 billion dollars that makes kif their largest source of foreign currency.

Law enforcement: Discretion is the key word here. The police are not interested in small time smokers: in the north of Morocco, a high proportion of the local men (and a fair few local women) smoke kif – poor quality ground marijuana mixed with ‘tabac sauvage’ [illegally cultivated tobacco] – and hashish. Do NOT travel with anything more than a few grams (i.e. anything you can quickly swallow or throw away). If the local police think you are involved in smuggling (even on a very small scale) you can look forward to a few very unpleasant years, stuck in a local prison. Think Midnight Express.

Where to buy marijuana: you can find some dealers near ibn-abbad or errazi highschools, but they only sell very low quality hashish and only for young people.

the best way to get good quality hash and with big quantity is in dallas (it was named afther the american dallas) but it’s a very dangerous district , there’s three famous dealers who sells hash at their homes (the police can’t get them because their in a dangerous district as i said before) but lately one of those got caught outside town.

Marijuana prices: the prices are very low nearly 10 to 15 dirhams per gram , don’t ask a dealer if you don’t want to buy because it could be very dangerous for you.

the broke locals usually buys a quantity of one or two joints, one for four dirhams two for seven

Marijuana brands: there’s the hash that can be bought anywhere

weed and kief or kif could be be purshased from big dealers

More information: don’t ask a dealer for cocaine, heroin, crack, or other drugs the only drug you can find is weed ,hash and kief.

if a dealer offers you some red pills or any other type of pills don’t buy them, because they can take your head off forever (that’s what happend to a friend of mine after only five uses of those pills).

Taghazoute, Morocco

Smoking tolerance level [1= very illegal 5=virtually legal]: 3

Legislation: Smoking marijuana, or “kif” is illegal in the Kingdom of Morocco and the penalty for being caught with it is ten years in prison. However, tourists are frequently let off with only a fine due to Morocco’s need for both the tourism dollars and the $US7 billion dollars that makes kif their largest source of foreign currency.

Law enforcement: If you don’t smoke openly in public (i.e. on the beach), you won’t have any problems.

Where to buy marijuana: Morocco has very high unemployment and, as a result, there are always bored young men wandering around who see themselves as “guides” but are frequently little more than dealers. If you’re approached by someone offering his services, he can almost certainly sort you out or point you in the direction of someone who can, even if he doesn’t initially mention hash.

Marijuana prices: $1-2 a gram. More expensive than the Rif as the dealers have to bribe the police to get their shipments down from the mountains (as they will be keen to tell you).

Marijuana brands: Most of what is available down in the south of morocco is cheap, fairly low quality hash. It is frequently adulterated with henna and it’s therefore worth pressing your dealer for some of the better stuff that he ineviitably keeps and smokes himself. At worst, you are going to buy a lump of hash that British smokers will be familiar with as “soapbar”. At best, there’s some nice stuff down here, though not usually of the quality you find in the Rif mountains.

More information: Essaouira is a sea-side town that has recently begun to transform itself from faded hippy destination to a “Moroccan riviera town”. There are increasing numbers of middle class, middle aged Europeans here. It is also the wind-surfing capital of Morocco with constant wind and relatively shetered, peaceful seas. Hendrix, Cat Stevens, Orson Welles and many others have lived here in the past. There is now a huge and, by all accounts, quite spectacular festival of Moroccan music here every year. Despite its gentrification, it’ still a very nice place.

Taghazoute is just down the coast from Essaouira, towards Agadir. It is Morocco’s board surfing capital and also plays host to large numbers of caravanners from Europe who over-winter here. It’s a pleasant enough place, though a bit dull if you’re not into surfing, drinking cheap spirits and wife swopping! The surfing community guarantees a good supply of hash and other drugs. We saw some poor quality opium here.

Tofo, Mozambique

Smoking tolerance level [1= very illegal 5=virtually legal]: 2

Legislation: Marijuana is illegal in Mozambique, and so is any related action.

Law enforcement: Mozambique police is notorious for annoying foreigners and trying to get a good bribe. So, you really have to remain discreet and avoid travelling with it.

Police are very corrupt, so getting busted means a bribe. “You’re screwed if any paperwork gets filed,” so smile and pay up. Cops don’t want to arrest you, they want your cash.

Where to buy marijuana: In Tofo, at the market, you’ll find people who’ll sell you some or can set you up. Try to go around 6PM.

In Maputo, don’t try on the streets. If you stay in a hostel, try to ask one of the guys who work there.

another reporter added: “Stay at a backpacker hostel, have an employee get it for you. You don’t even have to ever hold it, he’ll roll ’em up for you. Smoke inside the hostel (outdoors, of course), don’t carry any when you go outside the hostel, and you will have no worries.”

Marijuana prices: In 2006, I was quoted US$30 per kilo. Nobody bothers saving roaches, pot is dirt-cheap.

Marijuana brands: Local. I’ve seen better, but makes the job.

Windhoek, Nambia

Smoking tolerance level [1= very illegal 5=virtually legal]: 4

Legislation: As in most places, smoking in Namibia is against the law, which rightly doesn’t prevent anyone anywhere. It is widely used by locals of all races, languages and creeds.

Law enforcement: Windhoek is a very open city with many vegetated areas you can comfortably sit and toke away in without fear of law enforcement. It is important though to find a place that offers a view of the arrival of potential law enforcement troops. Getting caught can result in arrest, but can also often be dealt with an ‘offering’ of good faith, the true African way.

Where to buy marijuana: Low-grade Mijat (mee-dgud) can be bought at almost any parking lot of any shopping mall by asking the ‘car guards’, usually guys wearing lumo-orange jackets. But uppergrade buds, usually Swazi from South-Africa or chronic and # ,requires making friends with a few locals in the know, which can be done by asking almost any one of the local friendly party people you meet in the one of the clubs all mostly found in the Southern Industrial area. There is a very big, very established smoking community, so anyone you ask is bound to know a friend. Explaining your traveller status should be your passport to trust, as most people are very keen to make a new foreigner friend.

Marijuana prices: Lower grade mijat is as rediculously cheap as it is bad for your brain and memory, but gives giggles like nothing, but smoking too much makes you tired and sleepy. # can be bought for about 10U$ a gram and a bag of whatever is around should go for about the same.

Marijuana brands: Depends on what’s going on, but once every few months excellent quality Swazi does the rounds. Homegrown brands like AK47, Orange blossom etc also rears it’s head every now and then, but generally, you get bags of whats referred to as outdoor chronic. Pretty decent stuff and comes in quantity.

More information: People prefer smoking reefers to bongs, so get kitted with some papers and don’t carry bongs or incriminating evidence with you into clubs. Keep them save in a car or stashed somewhere to be reclaimed later.

Mauritius, Mauritius

Smoking tolerance level [1= very illegal 5=virtually legal]: 1

Legislation: Cannabis is illegal in Mauritius, and so is any related action. In short – better not get caught…

Law enforcement: very strict, even with a 1/2 a gram=big fines!!!

Where to buy marijuana in Mauritius: Only if you know someone that is a smoker.

Marijuana prices: 200 rupees for about half a gram.

these days it is extremely hard to find some good herb.

Brands: mostly bush but it’s good.

more information: WE ARE TRYING TO CHANGE THE LAW ON MARIJUANA AND NEED SOME SCIENTIFIC,HISTORICAL, AND ANY OTHER WAYS TO LEGALIZE IT! because 3/4 of our prisons are occupied with simple marijuana smokers, due to the strict laws on marijuana in mauritius…

Marrakesh, Morocco

Smoking tolerance level [1= very illegal 5=virtually legal]: 3.5

Legislation: Smoking marijuana, or “kif” is illegal in the Kingdom of Morocco and the penalty for being caught with it is ten years in prison. However, tourists are frequently let off with only a fine due to Morocco’s need for both the tourism dollars and the $US7 billion dollars that makes kif their largest source of foreign currency.

Law enforcement: This can be either vigilant or comically lax, depending on current world affairs, the season, location in Morocco, and temperment of the local chief constables. In Marrakesh police are everywhere but are usually uninterested in nailing western tourists trying to score twenty bucks worth from the teens at the tea shop. Be more careful of police informants trying to find someone to take the fall for them. Never tell a dealer where you are staying or what your travel plans are, no matter how friendly they are.

Where to buy marijuana in Marrakesh: In Marrakesh, just follow the tourists, the dealers are never far behind. If you are male and don’t look Moroccan, you will likely be approached a dozen times or more in your first day in the city, particularly at dusk and in crowded areas, like the Djemma-al-Fna, the giant central market square in the medina where all the action happens after sunset. While you’re oblivious and wandering around, someone will slip behind you and whisper “hashish?” into your ear. After a few days in the city, this will mostly stop as the dealers recognize you and know you’re not interested. Anywhere in the medina, falling into conversation with young males loitering around is likely to bear fruit as well.

Marrakesh Marijuana prices: This varies a lot depending on the individual and situation. Most dealers speak some English but knowing even a little French or Arabic can help lower prices as dealers always assume English speakers are rich. Also, bargaining in Morocco is almost as accepted a religion as Islam and locals love to wrangle over the price of just about anything with tourists. Expect a ridiculous first offer and counter with about a quarter of what they suggest. Mentioning competing offers (even if they’re totally fictional) can be effective to get a dealer to lower his prices. Many dealers will also give ludicrious estimates of the weight you’re recieving so take everything in stride. Dealers are often loath to let you see the product until they get the money too. In my last purchase, these two cousins selling spices on the outskirts of the medina sold me “10 grams” of hash. Of course, that seemed to be a gross overestimate of the actual weight. They asked for 400 dirham but after a lot of small talk and a tea in the nearby cafe we agreed on 160 dirham (about 18-19 USD at the time). I don’t know how much the stuff actually did weigh but it got several people perpetually stoned for a week, which was good enough for me.

Brands: Although I’m sure there are upscale dealers, the vast majority of what’s available is “Rif kif”, the famous hash grown and silked in the nearby Rif mountains, Europe’s largest source.

More information: I’ve also heard good things about Essouira, a coastal hippie enclave that hosted Jimi Hendrix and Cat Stephens in the late sixties and early seventies. It’s real laid back compared with Fez or Marrakesh and reportedly easy to score cheap hash in.

Rabat, Morocco

Smoking tolerance level [1= very illegal 5=virtually legal]: 4

Legislation: anyone caught could face jail but very unlikely.

Law enforcement: 80 per cent of policemen can be bribed for relatively cheap. there are exceptions though which could result in time. probably not though.

Where to buy marijuana: Hash dealers frequent the Medina and Centre

Ville neighborhoods at night – as a tourist this is where you are most likely to end up. many taxi drivers may offer as well if you are clearly a tourist.

Marijuana prices: If you are a local or can pass yourself off as one you could get 10 g for 200 dirhams, for tourists it is around 500 dirhams for the same amount. Feel free to haggle.

Marijuana brands: In the city, you might find Golden Pollen which is the best you can get in Rabat. all very good hash though.

More information: Moroccans are natural born hustlers of tourists. although the dealers aren’t too dangerous they will definitely attempt to hustle you by either grossly overcharging or selling chocolate wrapped up is a popular one too.

Nairobi, Kenya

Smoking tolerance level [1= very illegal 5=virtually legal]: 3

Legislation: very illegal, fines are high, due to anti corruption laws, they will make an example

It’s technically illegal, but i smoked in broad daylight walking down the street. I personally would not suggest doing this unless you have cash, because Nairobi is very…not corrupt, but money minded, anywhere someone can make a few extra bucks, including cops, they will.

Law Enforcement: they are more concerned with arm car jackers then a bunch of pot heads, but don’t blow smoke on the cops face, bad idea

ALWAYS carry some extra cash with you for bribes. If you are caught they will mess with you for a bit, but then just pull the head man aside and “settle” this problem.

Ask the main men at Nyari police sub-station, he he…bribes are on a sliding scale, if you seem rich,(mmm…white or indian) be ready to cough it up. a friend i know has paid as little as 200ksh 4$ to 15000ksh 250$ depending on how nasty or awesome the cops are!

Where to buy marijuana in Nairobi: Anywhere in the general vicinity of a shopping complex called “the mall”. From the people selling animals to street kids. its cheap too, really really cheap.

Not all that many people sell it, but most are willing to help you find it or will go get some for you. hash is very hard to find. always tip.

Nairobi marijuana Prices: I had hook ups with people, so i could get a pound for around 400 shillings, about ten bucks.

10ksh for a joint (10c american) or you can buy stones for 500ksh(8$) the joints have seeds and stems left in them, the stones are a best bet.

Nairobi marijuana Brands: ask for stuff from Kilimanjaro or Uganda, tends to be better. Dont ask for a ‘special’ they dip them in petrol.

More information: It’s not like a deal in the USA, be cool about it, friendly and tip the guy a little extra for the effort, that way you see him next time and you will probably get better bud. Don’t go anywhere with the guy, and don’t give him your cash, half for going, half when he gets back. and enjoy Nairobi, its a kickass place.

1/2 the people seem to think its worse then crack cocain and will sic the cops on you, 1/2 the people smoke the shit or will help you find some.

Cape Maclear, Malawi

Smoking tolerance level [1= very illegal 5=virtually legal]: 1

Legislation: N/A

Law Enforcement: The police do not tend to look for people with marijuana, so there’s nothing to worry about if you are careful and discreet.

Where to buy marijuana in Cape maclear Malawi: Anywhere in Malawi.

Good quality homegrown malawi grass ( known as ganja or dagga) anywhere in malawi. In Lilongwe, the capital, look for rasta types in and around the markets, but be very careful of pickpocketers.

Much easier and relaxed to buy dagga from the local tourist traders in Cape Maclear and Monkey Bay. Ask traders/hawkers at any of the other tourist towns around Lake Malawi. You will not have any trouble.

Malawi marijuana prices: USD$ 50 would buy you more than an ounce. It is very cheap

Malawi marijuana Brands: Good quality homegrown malawi grass ( known as ganja or dagga)

More information: Be discreet when smoking…only in your room, or out in the bush/beach, etc….not openly on the street, otherwise you are asking for trouble.
